The island’s speciality is a cheese served in salads with oil and pepper. It is almost even more famous than the capers, olives and Malvasia and, together with the ricotta, is one of the delicacies to hunt for early in the morning. The fish is super fresh and can be tried and tested in a number of top quality restaurants. Restaurant Maria Tindara is located in the Piano area, 7 km from the sea on the splendid island of Vulcano. Set amid the greenery of a pine wood opposite the majestic crater of the volcano, it has been run by Maria’s family for over thirty years and the cuisine is typically Aeolian. Home-made tagliatelle alla Vulcanara or alla Maria Tindara, lamb, chicken, involtini (wrapped parcels of meat, fish or vegetables) and delicious locally-caught fish dishes are just some of the things to look forward to. Every Wednesday and Saturday evening between June and September there is an opportunity to try out her pasta with beans and mussels, washed down, naturally enough, with local wines. There is a reception room for special occasions and comfortable bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. Pizzeria-meeting place da Conti “A Zammara” on the Ponente beach is a reference point at any hour of the day or night. Erik and his staff will make you their famous schiacciata, liven up your afternoons and well you never know. |
