Next to the small S.Giuseppe church (Marina Corta), in a quiet corner beside the sea is the pretty Al Pirata restaurant which offers the most authentic regional food. The friendly, welcoming atmosphere and the fast service make this one of the most popular places and definitely one of the most characteristic of the island. We recommend tagliolini with scorpion fish and prawns, tagliolini allo scoglio ( with seafood), ravioli with fish in a seafood sauce and involtini (little parcels) of fish with radicchio. Their grilled fish is superb.

The Le Macine restaurant is a small museum of farming tradition and culture, where you can take a step back in time and taste the genuine freshly cooked dishes. Carefully prepared to create new unusual flavours, yet in full respect of the culinary tradition of this land. And all accompanied by an excellent wine list, letting you chose from the best of Sicilian labels. Special mention goes to the house wine produced with love and care by the owners. If you don't feel like eating à la carte, there are always the tasty pizzas cooked in the wood-burning oven. The restaurant has a kiddies' playground and is about 1.5 km from the Quattrocchi beauty spot in one of the island's most enchanting quarters. Free shuttle service.

At the Ritrovo Sottomonastero (restaurant and pizzeria) just a few metres from the port of Sottomonastero (ships and hydrofoils) you can enjoy traditional dishes under a pergola in the central Via Vittorio Emanuele. You can chose between a wafer-thin pizza or a menu where fish is always the main feature. The specialities include Aeolian starters based on aubergine and fish, ‘Polpo al Malvasia’, stuffed squid in tomato sauce and various fish dishes, such as swordfish roulade. Accompanied, of course,  by a select choice of wine. And to finish: a vast choice of handmade desserts.

"l'Anfora" sits in Lipari. Here the Aeolian chef Maurizio prepares some of the best Mediterranean and Aeolian recipes with great style and elegance. Taste some of his specialities while soaking up the unique atmosphere: carpacci agli agrumi (a selection of raw fish with citrus fruit), fresh home-made pasta, such as fettuccine verdi con mandorle e mentuccia (green fettuccine with almonds and wild mint) or tagliolini ai frutti di mare (tagliolini in a shellfish sauce). Main courses include sea urchin roulade with crisp rocket salad and balsamic vinegar, “mostina alla paesana” and cod in a white wine and citron dressing. Plus many aromatic side plates and home-made desserts. Excellent wine list. To book: 328 6211249

The Sangre Rojo restaurant set among the Quattropani hills opened in 1998. The exceptional   position of its typically Aeolian terrace allows you to see Quattropani, Monte Sant’Angelo, a good deal of Sicily and the Alicudi, Filicudi and Salina islands all in one go. It is a unique sight from which to watch the sunset. Nunzia, the owner is delighted to receive her guests in this magic place, enclosed by a starlit sky where courtesy, kindness and elegance are intrinsic to the scene. Nunzia offers a choice of home-made starters as well as fish, a taste of three pasta dishes together, such as maccheroncini with shrimps and courgettes, pappardelle with scampi and fresh cherry tomatoes and sea food, followed by an assortment of grilled fish served with an exceptional seafood salad or, if you order them beforehand, rabbit in sweet sour sauce and baked lamb. Finally, the sweets are not to be missed: peaches in Malvasia, baba, not with rum but limoncello liqueur and typical Aeolian sweets. There is gentle music.Recommended in many good food guides, including the Touring Club Italiano guide, ‘Buona Cucina 2008/2009’.

The Trattoria del Vicolo is right in the centre of town, in one of the prettiest corners of the island, under the Acropolis. This restaurant has been run by three generations: grandpa Sarino, mamma Carmelina and now the young daughters Rosy and Ele. The restaurant boasts the talents of Giuseppe, a virtuoso chef from Trapani. Giuseppe creates some highly interesting and well balanced dishes, enhanced by fine Sicilian wines.  Not to be missed: the tasty hors d’oeuvres and the pasta dishes, such as “Donna Carmela” and spaghetti “Sapori di Sicilia”. Worth ordering in advance: “Zuppa di Pesce” [fish broth]. The excellent cuisine, the efficient service and pleasant ways of the staff and the charming welcoming atmosphere make this one of the most popular and characteristic places on the island.

In the heart of the old town centre and in the shadow of the Castle, the Trattoria D’Oro offers a choice of traditional Aeolian cuisine. The fragrance of Lipari capers can be found in the “Spaghetti all’Isolana”, in the “Spaghetti di Mezzanotte” and in the “Acciughe a Beccafico”. That exquisite delicacy, swordfish, is served in the “Ravioli di P. Spada in salsa di verdure”  and in the “Involtini di P. Spada”. You'll discover the delicate flavour of shellfish and seafood in the “Siluretti e Seppioline Gratinati”, in the “Spiedini di Mare” and in the “Tortino ai Frutti di Mare”. The “mariages” that the chef achieves in his strong yet at the same time delicate dishes - such as the “Cozze con Patate”, the “Risotto P. Spada e peperoni”, the “Linguine Vongole e Fagioli”,  “Spaghetti p. spada e fiori di zucca” “Fazzoletti di Tonno Affumicato con Zucchine Martoriate”, the “Tagliata di Tonno in Crosta di Sesamo e Melanzana gratin su Salsa di Peperoni”- are a perfect combination of the products of soil and sea. Not to be missed: the “Minole ca cipuddata”, the “Spatola al malvasia” and the “Gnotta da Madonna”. Those who don't eat fish  can enjoy the“Involtini di Carne”, the“Pollo Gratinato al Forno”, the “Bocconcini di Melanzane” and the“Caponata” all accompnaied by a wide selection of Sicilian, Italian and foreign wines… And to end the perfect meal, some delicious home-made desserts, such as the “Semifreddo al gelsomino con crema di limone”, the “Cassata siciliana”, the “Torta di mandorle e cioccolato” “Semifreddo di Piparelle al Malvasia con Salsa di Vino Cotto” accompanied by excellent sweet wines, such as “Malvasia”.

A stone’s throw away from the marina Corta in Lipari is the trattoria A’ Sfiziusa. Pino, the owner, whose experience  in the restaurant business is vast, is expert at recommending the right dish – spaghetti alla sfiziusa, with capers, anchovies, olives and parsley, or parcels on swordfish and stuffed squid – for example .

A’ Menza Quartara is situated at Quattropani. Here you can eat in the open countryside while enjoying the view of the sea. There is a wide choice of pizza or a menu with specialities such as “quattrupanara” salad, ziti pasta and rabbit in sweet sour sauce.

It is always advisable to book wherever you decide to eat.
